Clone VM Without Quiescing?

$

We use PowerCLI 5.1 to automate routine cloning of some VMs.  Since upgrading VMTools to 5.1, some VMs cronically fail to clone with this error when attempting to create a snapshot:

The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: 'VssSyncStart' operation failed: IDispatch error #8460 (0x8004230c)

To date, we've only had success recovering from this issue by restarting the VM, which is not ideal.  From researching, we could opt for a crash-consistent clone by avoiding the quiescing of the file system.  I did manually try taking a snapshot of the VM with quiescing enabled, and got the same error above.  When I do not quiesc, the snapshot is successful.

Is it possible to configure a VirtualMachineCloneSpec to avoid quiescing the file system (i.e. create a crash-consistent clone?)  Been searching around in the API and have not come across anything so far that leads me to believe it's possible.

Re: How do I restore a virtualized OS X Lion 10.7 client with Time Machine?

Hi Dan, and welcome to the VMware Communities!

The good news is that we are working on this and have made good progress.  It's not quite polished, but the infrastructure is now in place.  If you are feeling adventurous want to try it out, grab the VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2013, and add the following config option to the VM's .vmx file:

   SMBIOS.reflectHost = "TRUE"

With that option, the virtual machine will use the same hardware model information as the host (i.e. System Profiler inside the guest will report the same model information as the host).  Since the model information is embedded into the Time Machine backups and is checked at restore time, this won't necessarily help with full system restores from existing backup sets, but it should allow newly-created backup sets to be restored successfully.

Note that the Tech Preview is pre-release software, so it's not for everyone... Make sure you have adequate backups of your virtual machines (i.e. a full copy of the VMs taken while they are powered off) if you choose to play with the Tech Preview.

Cheers,

Create "powerfull" template with somehow ovf template

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is the good place for my question but here it is.

I've created a template (LAMP with a preconfigured CMS) but everytime someone need a new one, I deploy a new VM from my template. Then I need to change the IP address by hand, change some configuration in the mysql database (also by hand).

I'd like to know if it possible the to all this things with a wizard which will be able to change the values. I've got a look at vmWare Studio but I'm not sure this is the good tools.

Thx in advance for help.

I just did   this  Windows   8 64 guest openSUSE 12.3 host. Upgrade (from WS 9.0.2 VMwre Tools} )nstalled without a hitch. just needed a reboot which it asked permission.  In the VMwareTools on WS 9.0.2 I had    enabled timesync (C:\"program files"\vmware\"Vmware Tools"\vmwaretoolboxcmd timesync enable. . Timesync  remained enabled after the upgrade.

Did you perhaps try rebooting the guest from the VM power menu??

thanks for the reply. I can't seem to find an option for me to prepare each host one by one, apart from adding them all in one go option in the Provider VDC Setup Wizard. Can anyone show me where I can do this? If I go to Hosts in vCloud Director, there is no "Add a Host" option.

I did a re-install using VCO 5.1.1_2942, this seemed to mitigate the problem..

Should have looked closer at the logs:

A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network.  The IP address of the computer that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the Conflict state.

nbtstat does show the hosts name listed twice in <00> and <20>  on all adapters (Local, VMnet8, VMnet1) However none of the VMs have the same computer name. What causes workstation to assume the hosts computer name and throw the duplicate message? As I say as soon as I turn off the VMs the network is restored on the host.

Puzzling.

Scrollbar missing on Presentation element of workflow

$

I've exported a workflow from one of our VCO build 4.1.1_733 servers to a new build 5.1.1_2942 server. This particular workflow modifies values stored within a configuration element. When you execute the workflow running on the 4.1.1 server, it displays a scroll bar on the right hand side of the presentation window-it's missing on the 5.1.1 server, so you can't access some of the values. Anyone know what might be missing? I don't see a property within the WF to define anything for this. Thanks.

Manny,

I'm Randy Becraft, Senior Program Manager for the VMware Certification Team. I don't see that anyone is getting back to you. I may not be the right person to help but I will find the right person. Could you please provide the name of the VMware employee you were working with so I can follow up?

Thanks!

Randy

FC attached RDM - many errors in vmkernel.log

We have multiple ESXi 5.1 hosts attached to an IBM XIV.  We are exposing LUNs for use as RDM's.  In general this works great.  However, we are in the midst of migrating some clusters from iSCSI to FC and had an issue where the still-active iSCSI attached node had some delays and the cluster failed over to the other cluster node which was attached via FC to the same LUNs.

This is all MSCS.

On the ESX host where the active node is now, we're getting lots of these in the logs:

2013-06-06T23:08:44.812Z cpu22:5582616)NMP: nmp_ThrottleLogForDevice:2319: Cmd 0x2a (0x41244732b300, 5582610) to dev "eui.001738000f862592" on path "vmhba2:C0:T0:L40" Failed: H:0x1 D:0x0 P:0x0 Possible sense data: 0x6 0x2a 0x5. Act:FAILOVER

The LUNs associated with these errors are experiencing high latency.

Looking at the sense data codes, this seems to be a UNIT ATTENTION REGISTRATION PREEMPTED message.  I don't know what that means though, but seems to have something to do with SCSI-3 reservations.  There are lots of these messages scrolling by very fast -- and they hit every one of the four paths we have to this LUN in succession.

Other clusters and LUNs are still working ok.

Any thoughts?

I converted a Windows 2000 SP4 Acronis backup image. When power on machine, it goes to Blue Screen (BSOD). Message: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xEB41B848, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

  Physical Server:

     - SCSI Disk Device,

     - PERC Subsystem 2 Array Group 0, SATA Ports(Array Disk 0, Array Disk 1)

What can I do to go over the blue screen and start the server?

Any help will be very appreciated. Thank you.

Photoshop CS3 Licensing Issue

Hello,

I am trying to virtualize PhotoShop CS3, but I am encountering an issue.

First, I should point out that on this page, I don't really understand the instructions under the notes. I apologize for my lack of understanding, but I was just thrown into this project. I've gone ahead and attempted to create the thinapp without following the notes.

So anyway, I can create the thin app no problem, and I can run it as an admin just fine, but when I run it as a regular user I get the error  "Licensing service has stopped working" (one of the commenters in the page I linked above has the same issue, and another commenter apparently has a solution, but it did not work for me)

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: WSX on Synology NAS?

WSX is not a part of "WMware Ready" certification program. Your NAS is probably certified as storage and WSX won't work. (Though we have not
tried that internally.) Even if you somehow managed to get WSX working on Synology, you'd still need an instance of Workstation or ESX elsewhere. WSX alone cannot host or run VM. In your case, you would still need your host Windows machine up where Workstation is installed.

You can't use the same IP and FQDN for the vCenter server. That's about it really. If you use the vCenter appliance it should make the installation quicker as well.
